Effects of Climate on Pianos – Pianos in the Tropics

Changes in temperature and/or humidity can have a dramatic effect on a piano.  Modern pianos have improved design and have minimised these effects to s degree.

1.  Temperature Variation

The soundboard of the piano is wood supported by a cast iron frame and has steel strings attached.  All the  materials contract and expand as the temperature changes.  The rate of expansion and contraction varies in each component which means that a change of temperature will result in instability in the tuning.
